Causó irritación lo dicho por la secretaria de Estado Hillary Clinton. De inmediato se respondió que parte de nuestro problema está originado por el gran consumo estadounidense de drogas y la venta sin control de armas. Que, además, en Colombia, hay vastos territorios controlados por la guerrilla. Eso es cierto, pero debiéramos preguntarnos con objetividad si nos estamos acercando o alejando del riesgo de tocar fondo como ocurrió en Colombia hace 20 años. Para resolver un problema el primer paso es reconocerlo.
No estamos como Colombia porque nuestras historias son distintas. La reforma agraria de México dio más estabilidad en el campo por décadas. Porque nuestras economías tienen escalas diferentes. El peso relativo de su economía criminal en su producto interno era superior al de México. No lo estamos, por el tamaño de su guerrilla y porque los actos de terrorismo que llevaron a cabo sus organizaciones criminales fueron de mayor escala. ver>>

SECRETARY OF STATE Hillary Rodham Clinton caused a stir last week by suggesting that Mexico's drug-trafficking gangs were beginning to resemble an insurgency, like that which has plagued Colombia. She's right in the sense that the cartels have come to effectively control parts of the country, where they "attempt to replace the state," as Mexican President Felipe Calderón put it last month. Like most insurgencies, the Mexican drug armies also have an external source of funding and weapons. Shamefully, that is the United States.
A new report details the abundance of U.S. weapons delivered to the cartels -- and the inadequacy of U.S. efforts to stop the illegal trafficking. According to authors Colby Goodman and Michel Marizco, at least 62,800 of the more than 80,000 firearms confiscated by Mexican authorities from December 2006 to February 2010 came from the United States. Guns are being smuggled across the border at a rate of up to 5,000 per year. The top two varieties are assault rifles: Romanian-made AK47s and clones of the Bushmaster AR-15. ver>>

Es un campo minado por las FARC. 63 de sus bombas estallaron el 31 de agosto pasado y destrozaron a 14 policías de El Doncello, Caquetá en el sur de Colombia. Los uniformados quedaron calcinados, irreconocibles y ni siquiera sus compañeros pudieron reconocerlos.
No se descartan nuevos explosivos sobre la carretera desolada y polvorienta de Maguaré, corregimiento de Río Negro, sitio de la tragedia. Los observadores detienen su paso, miran con miedo y no se atreven a acercarse como quisieran.
Una mina antipersonal puede estallar y volar las piernas de quien esté cerca. "Es mejor observar desde acá", sugiere Antonio José, moto taxista o conductor de una motocicleta que hace el transporte desde El Doncello hasta Maguaré a dos horas de distancia por una vía en pésimas condiciones. ver>>

Despite gains against the FARC guerrillas, the country is now wrestling to quell local drug gangs terrorizing its cities.
Although Colombia delivered some heavy blows in its war against the FARC guerrillas over the past decade, the country is facing violence on an entirely new front. Just three years ago, top U.S. officials were touring the city of Medellín to demonstrate how successfully then-president Alvaro Uribe had rescued the country from Marxist rebels and paramilitary drugrunners. But in August, Medellín’s mayor took to the streets to march with protesters through ghettos racked anew by gang warfare. And just last week, Colombia’s new president, Juan Manuel Santos, deployed troops to the city, where more than 1,200 murders have occurred so far this year, with 503 gang-related deaths in the first four months of 2010 alone—a 50 percent jump from the same period last year. ver>>
